Traffic Alert for Windows Mobile

What is this application all about?

This app aims to provide near-instantaneous alerts to road users about the conditions on the road. The alerts are triggered by:

fellow iPhone OS and Windows Mobile users in Singapore
updates from LTA Traffic News web site. However, updates related to Roadworks will not be shown because, from past experience, there really are many roadworks in a day.

At the moment, fellow users can notify others about the presence of traffic policemen or about traffic congestion. This is the Windows Mobile equivalent to the iPhone OS app by the same name, except that, right now, there is no push notification support for Windows Mobile, unlike the iPhone OS. Nevertheless, any alert you send from your Windows Mobile device will be immediately pushed to the iPhone OS users. Windows Mobile users will have to manually refresh and fetch the alerts, for the time being.

Requirement

A Windows Mobile device with at least Windows Mobile 5.0 and .NET Compact Framework ver 2.0
An active internet connection either through WiFi, 3G or GPRS. Please note that while the amount of text data transferred is not huge, there are telco data charges for 3G/GPRS data transmission.

Installation

EITHER

You can click the installer below directly in your Windows Mobile device browser. The browser will download the file and install it for you.

Alternatively, if you want more control over the installation procedure, use your PC browser to right-click and save the cabinet installer to your PC hard-disk.
Connect you Windows Mobile device to your PC through Windows Mobile Device Center
Once a connection has been established, use File Management to transfer the cabinet file to your Windows Mobile device. If you require more information on how to do this, please click here.
Disconnect the Windows Mobile device
Use File Explorer in your Windows Mobile device to locate the cabinet file.
Tap once to install the application.
The default installation will copy the file into \Program Files\TrafficAlert folder. An application icon will also be created in Programs folder
To uninstall, use Remove Program under Settings\System

Beta version. You can now use the built-in GPS receiver in your Windows Mobile device to specify your current location. Do note that the accuracy of your location is dependent on your GPS location fix and Google Map location services. This version has been tested to work properly with:

iPaq 6965 (yes, we know, it's a very old device)

Bug fix:

When the application is first started, cached data from the previous run is shown, instead of the current alerts. This has now been fixed.

Traffic Alert v1.0

Initial release. Users can view and submit alerts. Works on Windows Mobile 5.0 with .NET Compact Framework 2.0. No push notification yet.
